What punitive actions can be taken if a newscast reports false information?

Intentional lying, or an honest mixup. Either way, what can be done about it? (In the USA)What punitive actions can be taken if a newscast reports false information?
News organization maintain a blanket immunity against mistakes. As long as they have made reasonable efforts to confirm information, an honest mistake is forgivable.

The only thing a news organization can really be called to task on is slander or libellous content, and for that, you have to prove damage, as well as prove that they broadcast the information knowing it was wrong, or so negligently that they SHOULD have known.

You should be aware it almost never happens.

Good luck, was it a story on you or one you did not like. even if it was you all they would do is make a correction of item.
If you have been slandered, then pursue that.

Most reputable media will gladly issue corrections if pointed out.

Beyond that, you can spend time meditating about the meaning of the First Amendment and why you were taught critical thinking skills all through your school years.
Looking for free money? If it was unintentional, you can ask them to publish a correction.

If it was malicious or intentional, and you have a public reputation that you can prove was adversely affected, you may have a case for libel or slander.

If you are not a public figure, and the misinformation constituted an invasion of privacy (even if it was true), you may have grounds for damages. It may not be worth the filing fee, much less the legal fees.
Honest mixup, nothing.

Intentional lying - sue for slander and libel if you can prove malice and damages.
