What does the law provide as punishment for filing a false report in Illinois? What about slander?

It depends on what report was falsely filed--tax, police, insurance, etc. Most are misdemeanors.

Slander, however, is not a crime; it's a tort. You can sue someone for slander, but you can't be locked up or criminally fined for slander. If you do sue someone, the most difficult hurdle you have is proving damages--there needs to be an economic damage for you to recover anything. What does the law provide as punishment for filing a false report in Illinois? filing a false report can and is punishable by the laws, it depends on what was supposedly wrongfully reported as to what the court would decide to do for a punishment or even up to the states attorney whether or not to even prosecute...as far as slander, in most cases it is a difficult thing to prove in court, I would say contact an attorney and see what can been done, but i wouldn't count on a lot in being awarded any damages though you would have to prove that you lost business or an income directly due to the slander...
